What stays with you

  1. The people who were enslaved brought knowledge. Mining in Minas Gerais used African techniques.
  2. Brazil received more than twice as many enslaved Africans as the second destination in the Americas.
  3. In 1872, 15 out of every 100 people living in Brazil were enslaved.
  4. Since 1850, public land can only be obtained by buying it. People leaving slavery had nothing to buy it with.
  5. Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery.
  6. The Lei Áurea freed people but gave no land, school or work to those leaving slavery. It also paid the owners nothing.
  7. In 1890, the government paid the fare of European immigrants and kept out Africans and Asians.
  8. The income gap between white and Black people persists even among those with a college degree.
  9. Both sides condemn slavery. They disagree on whether today's response should look at color or only at income.
