Slavery and the day after
Brazil was the country in the Americas that received the most enslaved Africans and the last to abolish slavery. This story tells what came before the Lei Áurea (the “Golden Law” that abolished slavery), what it left unsaid and what remained.
The path
- 1 Before the shipThe people who were put on board had trades, languages and countries.
- 2 The scaleNo country in the Americas received so many enslaved people.
- 3 1872The first Census counted 1.5 million enslaved people.
- 4 1850Before freeing people, Brazil closed off the land.
- 5 1850 to 1888Freedom came little by little, and with conditions.
- 6 May 13, 1888The law that freed people fit in two sentences.
