Empire

To vote, you needed an income.

Under the Empire, the main requirement to be a voter was an income of at least 100,000 réis a year.

People who could not read could vote. And almost no one could: at the start of the Empire, more than 90% of Brazilians could not read.

In 1873 the country had about 1.1 million voters.

Before you go on, a guess

In 1881 a law changed the rule. Out of every 100 people who voted, how many kept voting?
