The two sides
Both want every vote to count the same. They disagree on what is still missing.
People who vote left
“Those who went a century without the vote went a century without being heard.”
Why they think so
People who think this way believe that schools, health clinics and roads go where the voters are. Being shut out of the vote would help explain why the poorest got less from the State for so long.
What they propose
More women, Black people and poor people among those elected, with candidate quotas and a share of campaign money set aside for them.
People who vote right
“Today everyone has the vote. What's missing is holding the elected to account.”
Why they think so
People who think this way point out that the rule is already the same for everyone. For this side, setting aside candidate slots or money by group disrespects the voter's free choice.
What they propose
Better schools, less public money in campaigns and more accountability for those who were elected.
