Back to: Health clinic Vaccines: from revolt to Zé Gotinha PT

1973

The country swapped force for a program.

In 1973 Brazil received the international certificate that smallpox had been wiped out in the country.

That same year, on September 18, the National Immunization Program (PNI) was born, to organize vaccination across the whole country.

In 1980 came the national vaccination days against polio, the disease known in Brazil as infantile paralysis. In 1986 came Zé Gotinha, the vaccination mascot, drawn by the artist Darlan Rosa.
