The first Census counted 1.5 million enslaved people.

The 1872 Census found almost 10 million people living in the country. Of these, 1.5 million were enslaved: 15 out of every 100.

Of the whole population, 58% were recorded as Black or brown (pardo).

And 82% of people aged 6 or older could not read. Keep that number in mind: it comes back in the voting room.
