The scale

No country in the Americas received so many enslaved people.

Between 1501 and 1900, about 4.86 million enslaved Africans landed in Brazil.

The second destination was the British Caribbean, with 2.31 million. Less than half.

The figure comes from Slave Voyages, an international database that brings together the records of the ships' voyages.

Before you go on, a guess

In 1872 Brazil carried out its first Census. Out of every 100 residents, how many were enslaved?
