1850 to 1888

Freedom came little by little, and with conditions.

  1. 1850The arrival of ships carrying enslaved Africans is banned.
  2. 1871Free Womb Law (Lei do Ventre Livre): children of enslaved women are born free, but that freedom is still managed inside the master's house.
  3. 1885Sexagenarian Law (Lei dos Sexagenários): frees people over 60, who still owe up to three years of service to their former master.
  4. 1888Lei Áurea (the “Golden Law”). Brazil is the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery.
