The criticism

“Left and right don't exist anymore. They're all the same.”

It is a common criticism, and it has a basis: four in ten Brazilians don't see themselves in either label, and the center itself is hard to define.

Those who defend using the names cite the Italian philosopher Norberto Bobbio: left and right are not just ideas, they are opposing programs. When it is time to vote on taxes, pensions or schools, the difference shows.
